Pastoral Counseling, Volume 1

Pastoral Counseling, Vol 1 BookcoverThis work for priests and seminarians was developed in Rome for the North American Pontifical College for the purposes of training priests in pastoral counseling. It is perhaps the most practical and efficient tool of its kinds for the pastoral counsel of the Catholic priest. We provide a brief yet realistic appraisal of the inadequacies of modern psychology. The seminarian is in a unique position provided by his vocational path, education, formation, and experience; he is formed in a Christian anthropology which provides the essential foundation for a valid science of psychology.

A synthesis of the ontological principles and the nature of the human person- his faculties and passions- leads to the practical rudiments of pastoral counsel. Some of the topics discussed include:
  • Prudential judgment
  • Understanding
  • Listening skills
  • Communication
  • Dynamics and interventions
  • Causes and remedies for pain/pleasure
  • Emotions i.e. anger, anxiety
  • Depression
  • Alcoholism
  • Co-habitation
  • Infertility
